A cryptanalyst is a specialist who studies cryptographic systems with the aim of breaking them or assessing their security. The term applies to analysts who decipher encrypted messages without access to the secret key. Cryptanalysts may work on historical ciphers, modern encryption schemes, or a combination. The role is complementary to that of cryptographers, who design codes and protocols; cryptanalysts attempt to defeat or test them.

Key methods include frequency analysis, pattern recognition, and exploiting weaknesses in algorithm design, implementation, or key management. In classical cryptanalysis, analysts examine ciphertext for letter and symbol frequencies and repeated patterns; in modern contexts, they use mathematical and computational techniques such as algebraic attacks, differential and linear cryptanalysis, side-channel analysis, and cryptanalytic proofs. They frequently rely on computer tools, simulations, and access to large data sets. Knowledge of languages, history, and statistics can be helpful for deciphering.

History and applications: Cryptanalysts have played central roles in military intelligence and state security, notably during World War II with codebreakers at Bletchley Park who broke the German Enigma and other ciphers. In contemporary settings, cryptanalysts work in government agencies, defense contractors, financial institutions, and tech companies, testing encryption schemes, assessing protocols, and performing security audits and red-team exercises. They may contribute to standards and to academic research in cryptology.

Ethics and legality: Cryptanalysis raises questions of privacy, civil liberties, and lawful access. Professionals work under licenses and formal authorization, and responsible disclosure is emphasized when weaknesses are discovered.
