Cosmopolites is a genus of weevils in the family Curculionidae. The most economically significant species in this genus is Cosmopolites sordidus, commonly known as the banana root borer, a major pest of banana and plantain crops in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Biology and impact: Adults are robust brown weevils that feed on foliage, while females lay eggs in debris or near the base of infested plants. The larvae bore into the rhizome and pseudostem, destroying vascular tissue and weakening the plant. Infestations cause wilting, stunting, and, in severe cases, plant death, reducing yields and complicating harvest schedules. The pest is difficult to control due to the hidden larval feeding inside plant tissue and the ability of adults to move between plants.

Management: Control relies on integrated pest management, including sanitation (removing and destroying infested material), careful field hygiene, and pheromone-based traps to monitor and reduce adult populations. Biological controls such as entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi are employed in many programs, sometimes in combination with selective chemical treatments. Use of resistant cultivars and crop rotation can contribute to longer-term suppression, and quarantine measures are used in some regions to prevent the spread of the pest to new areas.

Cosmopolites can also be the plural form of cosmopolite, a person who identifies with multiple cultures or who regards the world as a single community. In sociology and philosophy, cosmopolites or cosmopolitanists are associated with cosmopolitanism, the idea of global citizenship beyond national boundaries. The term derives from the Greek kosmopolitēs, “citizen of the world.”
