A coronation is a formal ceremony in which a new sovereign is crowned and recognized as the reigning monarch. Traditionally associated with monarchies, coronations may confer ceremonial authority and legitimation, and in some states have religious dimensions, while in others focus on oath, regalia and public proclamation.

Core elements often include the presentation of the crown, regalia such as the orb and sceptre, the anointing with oil, vesting in ceremonial robes, and an oath to govern according to the constitution or laws. The rite is typically conducted by a religious official and may be followed by a coronation procession and the swearing to uphold duties.

Regalia symbolize royal authority and continuity. The crown represents sovereignty; the orb signifies worldly dominion; the sceptre and other insignia stand for governance and justice. These objects are usually safeguarded and only used at coronations and major state occasions.

Regional practice varies. In some constitutional monarchies, coronations are largely symbolic and the sovereign’s accession is a largely administrative act; other kingdoms retain elaborate rites, including oil anointing and multi-day ceremonies. Some countries have replaced or supplemented coronations with simpler enthronement ceremonies or no formal coronation at all since the early modern era.

Notable examples include the British coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and the coronation of King Charles III in 2023; the Netherlands held a coronation for King Willem-Alexander in 2013. Other monarchies in Asia, Africa and the Middle East maintain varied traditions of coronation or enthronement.

In modern times coronations are largely ceremonial, serving to symbolize unity and continuity, involve public rites and media attention, and reflect national historical identity. They may raise debates about cost, cultural heritage, and the role of monarchy in contemporary governance.
