A copacker, short for contract packager, is a company that provides packaging services for products manufactured by other firms. Copackers handle activities such as filling, labeling, capping, sealing, packaging into cartons, and palletizing, often also sourcing packaging materials and managing the packaging line. While copacking is primarily about packaging, many providers offer integrated services that combine packaging with basic manufacturing or formulation, sometimes described as contract packaging or contract manufacturing.

Copacking is used across a range of industries, including food and beverage, dietary supplements, cosmetics and personal care, household chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Services commonly offered include bottle filling, pouch or sachet filling, blister packaging, labeling compliance, date coding, tamper-evident seals, quality control checks, and finished-good packaging into cases or shrink-wrapped bundles. Some copackers also provide warehousing, order fulfillment, and distribution support.

The typical workflow involves a client delivering the product formula or finished product along with packaging specifications. The copacker audits requirements, sets up the production line, performs the packaging operations, conducts quality checks, and delivers finished cases or pallets ready for shipping. Documentation such as batch records, COAs, and traceability data is maintained to support recalls and regulatory compliance.

Regulatory and quality considerations include good manufacturing practices, certifications (such as GMP, HACCP, ISO, SQF), and sector-specific standards. In regulated industries, facilities may require FDA registration or compliance programs, and suppliers should implement robust QA/QC, confidentiality provisions, and clear IP protections.
