Convention-specific is an adjective used to describe features, practices, or signs whose interpretation is determined by the norms and agreements of a particular community rather than by natural properties. A convention-specific element gains its meaning through social convention; what a sign means to one group may differ in another, and can evolve as communities change their agreements.

In linguistics and semiotics, convention-specific signs are those whose meanings are established by collective consent within a given culture or subculture. The relationship between sign and meaning is not fixed by nature but by convention, so similar signs can diverge across communities or change over time.
