Convention-specific is an adjective used to describe features, practices, or signs whose interpretation is determined by the norms and agreements of a particular community rather than by natural properties. A convention-specific element gains its meaning through social convention; what a sign means to one group may differ in another, and can evolve as communities change their agreements.

In linguistics and semiotics, convention-specific signs are those whose meanings are established by collective consent within a given culture or subculture. The relationship between sign and meaning is not fixed by nature but by convention, so similar signs can diverge across communities or change over time. This notion helps explain why words, gestures, and symbols often acquire culturally bound interpretations.

Examples include linguistic norms, etiquette rules, and symbolic icons such as traffic signs or platform emojis whose meanings depend on local conventions. Cultural gestures, even if widely understood, can carry different connotations in different contexts or communities.

Methodologically, studies of convention-specificity draw on ethnography, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and digital ethnography to observe how conventions are formed, negotiated, and transmitted in daily use.
