In technical contexts it is often equated with contrast ratio, the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to the darkest black that a system can reproduce. A higher contrastniveau yields a more pronounced distinction between light and dark areas, while a lower niveau results in a flatter tonal range.

In photography and cinematography, contrastniveau refers to the tonal range of a scene or image. High-contrast scenes show strong differences between shadows and highlights, while low-contrast scenes contain more midtones and a narrower dynamic range.
