Constituentie is a Dutch term that directly translates to constitution in English. In a legal and historical context it refers to the fundamental law that establishes the organization, powers, and limits of a state’s government and guarantees certain rights to its citizens. The concept emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, coinciding with the rise of constitutionalism across Europe, and it remains central to the political framework of many sovereign states.

The Dutch Constitution, formally known as the Constitution of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was first promulgated in 1815 following the establishment of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was later revised after the separation of Belgium in 1830 and the introduction of the democratic constitution of 1848, which established parliamentary sovereignty.
