The field spans a wide range of materials and formats, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, works on paper, photographs, metals, ceramics, archeological finds, archival materials, and historic interiors or monuments. They may work in museums, archives, libraries, galleries, or private studios, and frequently collaborate with curators, scientists, conservators of other specialties, and archaeologists.

Education typically requires a university degree in conservation or restoration, with specialization (for example paintings, polychrome sculpture, paper, textiles, or metals). Training combines theory with hands-on practice—often via internships or apprenticeships—and may lead to master’s degrees. Ethical codes from bodies such as ICOM-CC emphasize minimal intervention, reversibility, thorough documentation, and respect for the original material.

Conservator-restauratoren use non-destructive analysis, stabilization, cleaning, consolidation, repair, and, when appropriate, inpainting or retouching. Treatments aim to be reversible and compatible with original materials.
