Clientagent is a software component that runs on client devices to perform tasks on behalf of a centralized management system. It is commonly used in enterprise IT, device management, and telemetry scenarios to enable remote configuration, monitoring, software deployment, and policy enforcement without requiring direct user intervention.

Typically deployed as a background service or daemon, clientagent establishes a secure, authenticated channel to a central server or cloud service. It supports push and pull communication models, receives instructions or policies, and reports status and telemetry data. Agents may run on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile platforms, depending on the environment and vendor.

Core functions include hardware and software inventory, configuration management, patch and software deployment, remote command execution, health checks, and event logging. They can enforce security baselines, collect diagnostic data, and trigger automated remediation when predefined conditions are met. Data formats are often JSON or XML, transmitted over TLS, with authentication via certificates or tokens.

Lifecycle and administration involve provisioning and onboarding new devices, policy definition, software updates, decommissioning, and revocation of access. Administrators must consider security, privacy, and consent, implement least-privilege execution, and ensure cross-platform compatibility and minimal performance impact.

Variants exist as vendor-specific solutions as well as open-source frameworks. The term clientagent is sometimes used generically to describe any endpoint agent that manages client devices from a central system, in contrast to agentless monitoring that operates without an installed agent.
