chiptochip is a term that emerged in the semiconductor industry to describe the direct electrical connection and communication between integrated circuits (ICs) or chips, bypassing traditional printed circuit boards (PCBs). This approach aims to reduce latency, improve power efficiency, and increase bandwidth by bringing the chips into much closer proximity. Instead of signals traveling longer distances across a PCB, chiptochip connections allow for very short, high-speed data pathways.

The development of chiptochip technology is driven by the increasing demand for higher performance and smaller form factors in electronic devices. It is particularly relevant in areas like high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and advanced networking, where speed and efficiency are critical. Several methodologies are employed to achieve chiptochip connections, including advanced packaging techniques such as 2.5D and 3D integration, where chips are stacked or placed side-by-side on an interposer or directly on each other. These methods utilize fine-pitch interconnects like through-silicon vias (TSVs) and microbumps to facilitate the electrical links.

While offering significant advantages, chiptochip implementation also presents challenges. These include thermal management, as chips placed in close proximity generate more heat, and the complexity of the manufacturing and testing processes. Despite these hurdles, chiptochip is considered a key enabling technology for future advancements in electronics, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of speed, density, and power consumption.
