Cementbonded refers to a type of construction panel made from cement and natural fibers, typically wood, bonded together to form a dense, durable board. Also known as cement-bonded boards or cement-bonded particleboard/fibreboard, these panels are designed as an alternative to gypsum or traditional wood-based boards and are used in various dry-building applications.

Composition and manufacture: Cementbonded boards are produced by combining Portland cement with wood fibers or chips and sometimes other mineral components. The mixture is formed into panels and cured under controlled conditions, often with steam or humidity, to achieve strength and stability. Depending on the formulation, boards are produced in thicknesses commonly range from about 6 to 20 mm and are suitable for cutting, nailing, and screwing.

Properties: The cement matrix imparts fire resistance and rigidity, while the wood fibers contribute weight reduction and some insulation properties. These boards are generally non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and offer good thermal and acoustic performance. They can be moisture resistant when properly manufactured and finished, but prolonged exposure to water can lead to deterioration. They are compatible with a variety of finishes and coatings and can be cut, drilled, and shaped with standard tools.

Applications: Cementbonded boards are used for interior walls and ceilings, partitions, and exterior cladding in certain climates. They serve as substrate for tiles and finishes in wet and dry areas and can be used for roof decking and floor underlayment in some systems. They are common in Europe, Asia, and other markets as a durable, lightweight alternative to traditional boards.

Advantages and considerations: The material combines durability, fire resistance, and ease of handling with relatively low weight. Limitations include sensitivity to prolonged moisture exposure without proper protection and the need for appropriate finishing to ensure long-term performance. Environmental aspects depend on the source of the wood fibers and manufacturing processes.
