Catastrophe refers to a sudden, violent event that causes extensive damage and disruption. In ordinary usage it implies a disaster of large scale, often with loss of life, injury, and widespread disruption to housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods. In risk assessment, catastrophes are low-probability, high-impact events that test systems beyond their normal capacity to cope.

Etymology: The word comes from Greek katastrophē, meaning overturning or reversal. In ancient Greek drama the term described a plot reversal. In modern usage it has broadened to describe extreme or catastrophic outcomes in many domains.

Categories: Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storms, wildfires, and droughts; human-made disasters including wars, industrial accidents, transport crashes, pandemics, and cyberattacks; and complex emergencies where multiple hazards coincide. Climate change is increasing the frequency or severity of some natural hazards, amplifying risk.

Impacts: Catastrophes cause casualties, displacement, damage to critical infrastructure, economic losses, and long-term environmental effects. Vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected. Disaster risk reduction seeks to reduce exposure, strengthen resilience, and improve preparedness, response, and recovery through measures such as land-use planning, building codes, early warning systems, and public education.

Response: Emergency services, humanitarian aid, and coordinated government action are typical components of the response. Frameworks that emphasize disaster risk reduction and international cooperation aim to minimize consequences and accelerate recovery.
