Catarafts are a type of inflatable raft designed for river running and whitewater. They consist of two inflatable tubes (sponsons) connected by a lightweight rigid frame, forming a catamaran-style hull. The frame supports a deck and seating and may hold an oar frame for rowing, gear storage, and dry boxes. Catarafts can be configured for solo use or for two or more paddlers, with the frame length and seating arranged accordingly.

Construction and configuration typically feature two durable tubes made from reinforced vinyl, such as PVC or Hypalon, and a modular aluminum frame. The deck may be a rigid floor or a stitched inflatable floor, providing a stable platform for standing and maneuvering. Seating, foot braces, and attachment points for oar rigs or paddles are mounted to the frame, and the setup can be adjusted to suit river conditions and load.

Performance and use characteristics include a low draft, which aids navigation in shallow, rocky rivers, and a hull design that offers good stability and predictable handling. The catamaran configuration enhances tracking and maneuverability, while the twin tubes provide buoyancy and fail-safe buoyancy in case of tube puncture. Catarafts are commonly used with oar rigs for rafting expeditions or personal trips and can be disassembled for transport and storage.

Compared with traditional single-hull inflatable rafts, catarafts are generally lighter and offer strong shallow-water performance and modular customization. They require regular maintenance of tubes and frame connections but are valued for their versatility, load capacity, and adaptability to different river environments.
