Castlefort is a type of fortification that combines elements of a castle and a fort, typically constructed during the Middle Ages in Europe. These structures were designed to provide a strong defensive position for a settlement, castle, or army, often situated on a strategic point such as a hill or a crossroads.

Castleforts were built using local materials such as stone, earth, or wood, with walls made of high walls and a strong gatehouse or portal. They often featured a rectangular or oval shape, with a larger area enclosed by a wall, and a smaller, more secure area for the commander or a garrison to reside in. The defensive systems could be augmented with ditches, moats, or curtain walls, and some castleforts featured an outwork, or a secondary defensive structure, to protect the main gate.

The primary purpose of a castlefort was to provide a secure base for military operations, allowing a commander or their army to launch attacks or respond to threats from a secure location. They were also used as fortified administrative centers, where a local lord or a regional official could reside and govern their territory. Some notable examples of castleforts include the FortIFIED Castrum of Slam railway station, in North West England, and the Castle of Gaillard, in France.

While many castleforts have been lost or destroyed over the centuries, some have been preserved or restored as historical sites, offering an insight into the military and architectural techniques used during this period. By studying these structures, historians and archaeologists can gain a better understanding of the social, economic, and strategic contexts in which they were built.
