Cariostatic refers to agents or substances that inhibit or prevent the progression of dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay. These agents work by various mechanisms, primarily by interfering with the demineralization-remineralization balance in tooth enamel, which is crucial for maintaining tooth structure.

One of the most well-known cariostatic agents is fluoride. Fluoride ions can be incorporated into the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid dissolution caused by bacteria metabolizing sugars. Additionally, fluoride promotes remineralization, helping to repair early enamel damage. This is why fluoride is a common ingredient in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and is often added to public water supplies.

Other cariostatic strategies include the use of sealants, which are protective plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent decay. These sealants fill in the pits and fissures where food particles and bacteria can easily accumulate. Certain xylitol-containing products, such as sugar-free gums and candies, are also considered cariostatic. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that bacteria in the mouth cannot easily metabolize, thus reducing acid production. It can also interfere with bacterial adhesion to teeth.

The effectiveness of cariostatic agents is enhanced by good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing and flossing, and a balanced diet low in fermentable carbohydrates. Understanding and utilizing cariostatic principles are fundamental to modern dental caries prevention.
