The genus Canassous is a small group of bats belonging to the family Vespertilionidae, commonly known as vesper bats. This genus is primarily found in Australia and New Guinea, with species adapted to a variety of habitats, including forests, savannas, and urban areas. The name Canassous is derived from the Latinized form of the Aboriginal word for one of its species, the Canassous or Canassow bat, reflecting its cultural significance in the region.

There are two recognized species within the genus: Canassous index and Canassous tomensis. Canassous index, also known as the southern forest bat or southern long-eared bat, is widely distributed across eastern and southeastern Australia. It is characterized by its long ears, which are nearly as long as its head and body combined, and a distinctive pale stripe along its back. This species is nocturnal and feeds primarily on insects, including moths, beetles, and true bugs, which it hunts using echolocation.

Canassous tomensis, or the northern forest bat, is found in northern Australia and New Guinea. It shares similarities with C. index, such as its long ears and similar diet, but is generally larger and has a slightly different vocalization pattern. Like its southern counterpart, it inhabits forested areas and plays a role in controlling insect populations.

Both species are solitary or form small colonies, often roosting in tree hollows, crevices, or human-made structures like barns and sheds. They are not considered endangered, though habitat destruction and fragmentation pose threats to their populations. Conservation efforts focus on preserving forested areas and raising awareness about their ecological importance.

Canassous bats contribute to ecosystem health by regulating insect populations, serving as prey for larger predators, and aiding in seed dispersal through their feeding habits. Their long ears and specialized echolocation make them well-adapted to navigating dense forests and detecting prey efficiently.
