Camelhair refers to the natural fiber obtained from camels, especially the soft undercoat, though the outer guard hairs are also present. The term is used for fabrics and yarns derived from camel fiber and is most commonly associated with the warm, lightweight quality of the material. Camel hair can come from different camel species, notably the dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) and the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus). The undercoat is the portion valued for textiles, while the guard hairs contribute structure.

The camel’s coat consists of two layers: a short, fine inner coat that provides insulation and a longer, coarser outer layer. In textile production, the loose undercoat is collected during molting or by light combing, then cleaned, carded, and spun into yarns. The natural color ranges from pale beige to light brown, though camelhair fabrics can be blended or dyed to broader palettes.

Characteristics and uses: Camelhair fibers are soft to the touch, lightweight, and offer good warmth for their weight. They are generally less insulating than cashmere but are noted for their drape, resilience, and ability to take dye. Camelhair is commonly used for coats, jackets, suits, and blankets, frequently in blends with wool or synthetic fibers to enhance durability and cost efficiency. The fiber is typically brushed to create a smooth nap in finished garments.

Care: Garments made from camelhair are usually dry-cleaned or gently hand-cleaned. They should be protected from high heat and rough agitation to preserve the fiber’s softness and appearance. The term camelhair has also historically referred to the natural color of the fabric, reinforcing its association with luxury outerwear.
