The byggeskallet is the outer shell of a building that separates interior spaces from the external environment. In English it is often called the building envelope or building shell. It encompasses the load-bearing structure as well as the protective, enclosing layers that form the boundary between inside and outside.

Key components include walls, roof, foundation, and openings such as windows and doors, together with insulation, air barriers, moisture barriers, damp-proofing, cladding, and the interior finishing layers that are in direct contact with the heated interior air.

Functions: thermal protection, moisture control, protection from wind and weather, airtightness, noise reduction, and fire safety. A well-designed byggeskall minimizes heat loss, prevents condensation and mold, and contributes to energy efficiency.
