Bootlegging is the illegal production, distribution, or sale of goods, often alcohol, and it can also refer to the unauthorized copying and distribution of copyrighted works. The term originates from smuggling liquor in boots or shoe tops and was popularized during the United States Prohibition era (1920–1933), although illicit trade occurred in various forms before and after. Bootlegging can involve clandestine production, hidden transport, and covert distribution networks designed to evade authorities.

During Prohibition, bootleggers operated hidden distilleries and breweries, imported alcohol, and distributed it through speakeasies and illegal networks. The trade was closely tied to organized crime, corruption, and violence in many areas, prompting government raids, anti-smuggling laws, and eventually the repeal of Prohibition.
