Bonelabeling is a term used in biomedical and imaging contexts to denote the process of tagging bone tissue or bone-related data with labels to aid identification, tracking, or analysis. The concept encompasses labeling of mineralizing bone in living organisms, labeling of bone components in histological sections, and labeling of bone structures in imaging datasets.

In vivo labeling methods include radiotracers or fluorescent markers that become incorporated into mineralizing matrix, enabling visualization of bone formation or turnover in PET/SPECT or fluorescence assays. Ex vivo labeling in histology uses antibodies or probes against bone matrix proteins (such as collagen type I or osteocalcin) or mineral labels (calcein, alizarin complexone) to characterize bone tissue composition. In imaging informatics, bonelabeling can refer to labeling or segmentation of bones in CT, MRI, or micro-CT datasets to facilitate quantitative analysis or machine learning training.

Applications of bonelabeling span orthopedic and rheumatologic research, osteoporosis and fracture healing studies, forensic anthropology, and educational anatomy. In these contexts, bonelabeling supports tracking remodeling, validating biomarker assays, or producing labeled datasets for algorithm development.

Limitations and considerations include safety concerns with radioactive tracers, specificity of labels to bone versus surrounding tissues, potential artifacts from labeling timing or staining, and resolution limits in imaging modalities. In computational labeling, inconsistency between datasets can affect reproducibility.
