Bodhi is a term used in Buddhism to denote awakening or enlightenment—the profound insight into the true nature of reality that ends ignorance and craving and leads to liberation from the cycle of rebirth. In Buddhist doctrine, attaining bodhi is the ultimate goal of practice, though interpretations of how that awakening manifests differ among traditions.

Etymology and usage: Bodhi comes from Sanskrit bodhi and Pali bodhi, rooted in the idea of awakening or knowledge. It is often described as the direct realization of emptiness, interdependence, and the true nature of phenomena (pratītyasamutpāda) and is linked to wisdom (prajna) as well as ethical conduct and calm abiding.

The sacred Bodhi tree and site: The term is closely associated with the tree under which Siddhartha Gautama is said to have attained enlightenment. This event occurred at Bodh Gaya in present-day Bihar, India, where the Mahabodhi Temple complex and a sacred bodhi tree (a descendant of the original) stand today. Bodh Gaya is a major pilgrimage site, and the temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Doctrinal significance: In Theravada Buddhism, bodhi refers to the awakening that leads to nirvana and the end of suffering, often realized through meditative insight and ethical living. Mahayana traditions emphasize bodhi as Buddhahood or the perfection of wisdom (prajnaparamita), with the Bodhisattva path aiming for universal awakening through bodhicitta—the compassionate resolve to liberate all beings.
