Blastbeholdere are engineered enclosures designed to contain the effects of a localized explosion and to protect personnel, equipment, and surrounding structures. They are intended to absorb blast energy, limit fragmentation, and redirect pressure waves away from occupied spaces.

Typical construction combines thick, reinforced walls with internal liners and robust anchorage. Materials commonly used include steel, reinforced concrete, and composite laminates. Many designs incorporate venting provisions such as rupture panels or controlled vents to relieve overpressure safely, while still containing fragments. Doors, seams, and penetrations are reinforced and sealed appropriately to minimize leakage and hot gas ingress.

Applications include laboratories handling energetic materials, chemical plants, mining facilities, ammunition depots, and industrial plants where explosion risk exists. They may be used as standalone vaults or integrated into building facades and process facilities. Location and siting are important to reduce risk to other occupants and to allow safe evacuation and access for maintenance.

Design and testing follow recognized standards and guidelines from safety authorities, including national fire protection agencies and international bodies. Engineers assess incident scenarios, set design pressure ratings, and perform validation tests and inspections. Maintenance includes periodic inspections of joints, vents, doors, and anchorage, and updating protection measures as operations change.
