birdfriendly
Birdfriendly is a label used for products, practices, and designs intended to reduce harm to birds and to support bird habitats. The most prominent use is in the coffee sector, where BirdFriendly is a certification developed by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center to identify shade-grown coffees that provide habitat for migratory and resident birds. The certification emphasizes ecological balance, biodiversity, and responsible farming practices. To qualify, coffee farms must maintain a multi-layered canopy, native tree species, and a diverse habitat that supports birds; chemical pesticides and fertilizers are limited or avoided; water quality and soil health are considered; and farms undergo annual verification.
Beyond coffee, the term is used more broadly to describe products or buildings that minimize bird hazards.
The lack of a single global standard means specifications for birdfriendly labeling can vary by product category
