The most prominent use is in the coffee sector, where BirdFriendly is a certification developed by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center to identify shade-grown coffees that provide habitat for migratory and resident birds. This includes architecture and product design that reduce window collisions with bird-safe glass, bird-friendly lighting, and landscaping choices that create safe, ecologically valuable habitats in farms, urban areas, and preserves. In urban planning, birdfriendly practices may involve preserving mature trees, installing native plantings, and avoiding light pollution during critical migration periods.

The lack of a single global standard means specifications for birdfriendly labeling can vary by product category and certifying body. Consumers should verify the criteria behind any label or claim.
