Bioplasttyper is a term used to describe a typology or framework for classifying bioplastics and bioplastic products. It is not a formal standard but a conceptual tool used by researchers, manufacturers, and policymakers to compare materials and guide selection across applications.

A typical bioplasttyper organizes polymers along several core dimensions. These include feedstock origin (bio-based versus fossil-based), biodegradability and end-of-life behavior (biodegradable and compostable, biodegradable in specific environments, or non-biodegradable), and production or processing type (biotechnological fermentation-derived polymers such as polylactic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoates; chemically synthesized monomers from bio-based sources; or conventional polymers with partial bio-based content). End-of-life pathways—industrial composting, home composting, anaerobic digestion, recycling, or disposal—are central to the framework. The typology helps map polymers to applicable certification schemes and standards, such as OK compost INDUSTRIAL, ASTM D6400, and EN 13432, though regional regulations vary.

Common examples referenced within the typology include PLA (bio-based and typically biodegradable under industrial composting), PHA (bio-based and biodegradable), PBS (bio-based or petrochemical variants with varying biodegradability), and bio-based PET (bio-PET, non-biodegradable). The framework also covers materials that are bio-based yet non-biodegradable and those that are fossil-based but biodegradable, as well as blends and composites.

Limitations of the typology include overlapping material properties, evolving feedstocks, and inconsistent certifications for certain end-of-life scenarios. Accurate sustainability assessment generally requires life-cycle analysis, accounting for factors such as land use, water, energy, and greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to end-of-life considerations.
