Biopestycydów, or biopesticides, are a category of pest control agents derived from natural materials such as animals, plants, bacteria, or minerals. They are used in agriculture, forestry, and public health to manage pests and diseases in an environmentally sustainable manner. Unlike conventional chemical pesticides, biopesticides tend to have a targeted mode of action, reducing the risk to non-target species and minimizing environmental impact.

Biopesticides can be classified into three main types: microbial, biochemical, and botanical. Microbial biopesticides contain live microorganisms, such as bacteria (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis), fungi, or viruses that specifically infect or inhibit pests. Biochemical biopesticides include naturally occurring substances, such as insect pheromones or plant extracts, which interfere with pest behavior or development. Botanical biopesticides consist of plant-derived compounds, such as neem oil or pyrethrins, which have insecticidal properties.

The use of biopesticides offers several advantages, including specificity to target pests, reduced toxicity to humans and ecosystems, and biodegradability. These qualities make them suitable alternatives or supplements to synthetic pesticides, especially within integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. However, biopesticides may have limitations, such as narrower pest spectrum, shorter residual activity, or sensitivity to environmental conditions.

Research and development in biopesticides focus on enhancing efficacy, stability, and cost-effectiveness to facilitate broader adoption. Regulatory frameworks vary globally but generally require safety and efficacy evaluations before market approval.
