Bildsignaler, or image signals, are signals that convey visual information captured by sensors or transmitted as video data. In general, an image signal is a function of spatial coordinates (x, y) and, for moving images, time t. A still image is a single frame; motion pictures are sequences of image signals over time (video).

In digital imaging, image signals are represented as discrete samples on a grid, i.e., pixels. Color images typically use three channels (red, green, blue), with values quantized to a bit depth per channel (commonly 8 bits). Processing includes filtering, compression, and enhancement; operations treat the signal as a two- or three-dimensional array.

Image signals can be transmitted as analog video signals or as digital streams using standards and codecs. Modern systems separate content into frames and compress using formats such as MPEG, H.264/AVC, or HEVC, and deliver over various interfaces (HDMI, SDI, IP).

Bildsignaler are central to imaging, broadcasting, computer vision, and medical imaging. In signal processing, they are modeled as 2D (or 3D for color video) signals and analyzed with methods such as Fourier transforms, wavelets, and filtering.

Understanding bildsignaler involves considerations of spatial resolution, dynamic range, color encoding, and sampling theory. The term is often used interchangeably with image data in Swedish and related languages.
