Biasmotstander are passive components used to establish and stabilize the direct current (DC) operating point of active devices such as bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and field-effect transistors (FETs). In Norwegian technical usage, biasmotstander means bias resistors, which provide the necessary bias voltage or current without substantial signal modulation.

In transistor biasing, biasmotstander form networks that set the base or gate voltage and thus the quiescent operating point. Common configurations include fixed bias (single resistor from supply to base), and voltage-divider bias (two resistors from supply to ground creating a stable base voltage, often with an emitter resistor for negative feedback). The resistor values influence stability against variations in transistor gain and temperature. For FETs, bias resistors establish the gate voltage while gate leakage is typically small, making high-value resistors common to minimize power consumption.

Design considerations center on bias stability and power handling. Variations in device gain and ambient temperature can shift the operating point, affecting amplification linearity or switching behavior. Techniques to mitigate drift include using a voltage-divider with emitter (or source) degeneration, incorporating temperature compensation diodes or thermistors, and employing feedback within the circuit. Power ratings must cover the DC dissipation in the bias network, and resistor tolerances affect the precision of the bias point.

Biasmotstander are widely used in audio amplifiers, switching circuits, and sensor interfaces, where a predictable operating point is essential for consistent performance. They are often chosen to balance low current draw with adequate bias stability, and to minimize noise and drift in the overall circuit.
