It describes a situation where a person or group is treated as if they were incapable of making their own decisions or acting in their own best interests, and therefore require supervision or control by another party. This can occur in various contexts, from interpersonal relationships to political or social policies.

In a personal relationship, bevormundung might manifest as a partner making decisions for the other without consultation, or a parent making choices for an adult child that are not necessarily in line with the child's desires.
