Betahydroksühapped, often abbreviated as BHAs, are a class of organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl group located on the beta carbon atom of a carboxylic acid. The most well-known and widely used BHA is salicylic acid, which is derived from willow bark. BHAs are known for their ability to penetrate the oily pores of the skin, making them effective exfoliants.

In skincare, BHAs are primarily used for their keratolytic properties. This means they help to break down and shed dead skin cells, unclogging pores and improving skin texture. Salicylic acid, in particular, is lipophilic, allowing it to mix with sebum (oil) on the skin and penetrate the pore lining. This makes BHAs highly effective for treating acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. They can also help to reduce inflammation and redness associated with breakouts.

Beyond salicylic acid, other BHAs exist, though they are less common in cosmetic formulations. Their mechanism of action generally involves disrupting the bonds between skin cells, promoting exfoliation. While beneficial for many skin types, particularly oily and acne-prone skin, BHAs can cause dryness or irritation in some individuals, especially when first introduced into a skincare routine or used at higher concentrations. It is often recommended to start with a lower concentration and gradually increase usage as tolerated. Sunscreen use is also important when using exfoliating acids like BHAs, as they can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun.
