Bergutgraving refers to the excavation of rock from a rock mass for ore extraction, tunnel and cavern construction, or other subsurface works. The term, used in several European languages, combines berg (rock or mountain) with utgraving (excavation). The practice encompasses both underground operations and the removal of rock on a site to create voids and access routes.

The work begins with site investigation and geotechnical assessment to determine rock quality, stability, water conditions, and seismicity. Excavation is achieved through a combination of drilling, blasting, and mechanical methods. Blasting designs aim to control rock fragmentation and ground vibration, while mechanical methods use equipment such as roadheaders, tunnel boring machines, and other rock-excavation tools. Vertical or inclined shafts may be produced with raise boring or shaft-sinking techniques.

Support systems are installed as excavation advances to prevent collapses, including rock bolts, shotcrete, steel sets, and lining. Muck removal and material handling restore the face and maintain progress. In underground work, ventilation, dewatering, dust control, and gas monitoring are critical for safety.

Environmental and regulatory aspects include management of groundwater, surface subsidence, noise and dust, and the handling of waste rock. Projects require permits and adherence to safety and environmental regulations, as well as ongoing geotechnical monitoring.

Bergutgraving is a multidisciplinary activity involving geology, mining engineering, and construction disciplines, and is carried out in mining, tunnel construction, hydroelectric schemes, and large civil projects.
