Belgilars are a recently described genus of small, arboreal lizards belonging to the family Gekkonidae. First identified in 2022 during a survey of the montane forests of the high Himalayas, they were initially classified under the provisional name *Gekko belgilar*. The name "belgilars" derives from the local dialect, wherein the term refers to "tree dwellers with bright tails."

Morphologically, belgilars possess a slender body of 7–9 centimeters in snout‑to‑vent length, with a prehensile tail that can exceed their body length. Their dorsal coloration ranges from olive green to cryptic brown, allowing camouflage against bark and moss. A distinctive feature is a set of translucent, iridescent scales along the flank that shift hue under light, reportedly used during intraspecific display. Male belgilars develop a pair of lateral spines near the dorsal base during the breeding season, a trait not observed in related genera.

Habitat studies indicate that belgilars inhabit elevations between 2,500 and 3,800 meters, favoring moist, moss–covered tree trunks. They are primarily insectivorous, preying on ants, beetles, and smaller arthropods. Nocturnal activity patterns have been recorded, with daytime retreat to narrow crevices. Seasonal variations in behavior have been noted; during the post‑monsoon months, belgilars form small aggregations, perhaps for thermoregulation or mating.

Conservation status remains undetermined due to limited field data. Preliminary assessments suggest that while their range overlaps with protected forest reserves, ongoing deforestation and climate change pose threats. Further research is required to establish population estimates, ecological roles, and potential conservation measures.
