Beyond salicylic acid, other BHAs like mandelic acid are also used in skincare. Mandelic acid is larger in molecular size and is considered gentler than salicylic acid, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin. It also offers antibacterial and skin-brightening benefits. BHAs are found in various skincare formulations, including cleansers, toners, serums, and chemical peels, typically at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 10%. When using BHA products, it is important to follow product instructions and consider using sunscreen, as exfoliation can increase skin's sensitivity to the sun.
