Battings are padding layers used in quilting and related crafts to add loft, warmth, and thickness to fabric assemblies. In a quilt, batting is placed between the top fabric and the backing and is often stitched in place to prevent shifting during use. Battings are also employed in upholstery and throw blankets, where they contribute comfort, bulk, and shape.

Common battings come in natural fibers such as cotton and wool, as well as synthetic options such as polyester and blends. Cotton battings tend to be breathable and have good handling characteristics; wool battings provide warmth with natural loft and resilience; polyester battings are lightweight and affordable and often machine washable. Some battings include a scrim—a lightweight fabric binder—to improve stability in larger projects.

Battings are sold in sheets or rolls and are available in varying lofts, from low to high. Loft is typically described by thickness and weight, often measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square meter. Quilters choose depending on desired warmth, drape, and quilting style. Formats may be labeled as low loft, mid loft, or high loft and may be pre-cut for specific project sizes.

Care and use vary by material. Cotton and polyester battings are commonly machine washable and dryer-safe at low heat, while wool battings may require gentler care or dry cleaning. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions to prevent shrinkage, felting, or fiber migration.
