Basisstationsystemen, often referred to as Base Station Subsystems (BSS), are a critical component of cellular communication networks, particularly in older generations like GSM and early LTE. The primary function of a BSS is to manage the radio communication between mobile devices (user equipment) and the core network. It acts as a bridge, handling the radio frequency aspects and ensuring that calls and data transmissions are successfully established and maintained.

A typical BSS comprises several key elements. The Base Transceiver Station (BTS) is the most visible part, responsible for the actual radio transmission and reception. It contains the antennas and radio hardware. Multiple BTSs are connected to a Base Station Controller (BSC). The BSC manages the radio resources, handovers between cells, and controls the BTSs within its area. It also interfaces with the core network, typically the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) for voice traffic and the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) for data traffic in GSM.

The BSS plays a vital role in optimizing radio capacity, managing interference, and ensuring seamless mobility for users. When a mobile device moves from one cell to another, the BSS orchestrates the handover process, transferring the connection without interruption. The BSS also handles tasks like channel allocation, power control, and signal measurement to maintain the quality of the wireless link. While newer network architectures have evolved, the fundamental principles established by BSS designs continue to influence modern cellular infrastructure.
