Balansmodule is a term used in energy management and control systems to describe a modular component that ensures balance between energy generation, consumption and storage in a defined system boundary. It can be hardware, software, or a combination, deployed within microgrids, industrial plants, or utility-scale installations. The primary objective is to maintain system stability by minimizing imbalance energy and supporting grid services such as frequency regulation.

Core functions include real-time data acquisition from meters and sensors, imbalance calculation relative to forecasted demand and available generation, optimization and dispatch of controllable resources (generation units, storage, demand response), and communication with higher-level energy management systems and market interfaces. The module also provides forecasting inputs, such as weather and load predictions, and records performance metrics for analytics and reporting.

Operation typically follows a cycle: collect data, compute current imbalance, run optimization to determine setpoints, apply control actions to resources, monitor results, and adjust as needed. It may operate on timescales from seconds to hours, depending on system requirements and market rules. In market contexts, the balansmodule can be part of the balancing mechanism that clears the energy market and reports residual imbalances to the balancing authority.

Deployment models vary: it can be a standalone unit, a software component within an EMS/SCADA platform, or a cloud-based service. Standards and protocols often include industry protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 62351, OPC UA, and common communication interfaces.
