Avlesning is a term used in Norwegian (avlesning/avlesing) and, in similar form, in Swedish (avläsning) to denote the act of reading the current value displayed on a measuring instrument. It is most commonly applied to utility meters, where the reading determines consumption and forms the basis for billing, but the concept also applies to other types of meters and data-gathering devices.

In practice, an avlesning involves recording the numeric value shown on the meter, along with the date of the reading and the meter’s identification. The reading may be taken by the customer, a property manager, or the utility company. Sometimes the reading is accompanied by a photograph or entered into an online portal to ensure accuracy and traceability. Readings can be submitted manually or collected automatically.

With advances in technology, many systems now use remote reading technologies such as automatic meter reading (AMR) or advanced meter infrastructure (AMI). Smart meters can transmit consumption data at regular intervals, reducing the need for manual readings and enabling more frequent billing and better monitoring of usage.
