Psychological factors such as body image concerns, stress, and mood disorders can compound physical symptoms.

Management is typically integrated into rheumatology or primary care and may involve disease control to reduce symptoms, personalized symptom relief (for example, vaginal moisturizers or lubricants for dryness, pain management, pelvic floor physical therapy), and psychosocial support. Open communication with partners, sex therapy, or counseling can help. Pregnancy and fertility considerations require specific planning with healthcare teams, given potential disease activity changes and medication safety.

Research on sexual health in autoimmune populations exists but is limited and heterogeneous. Routine assessment of sexual function is increasingly encouraged as part of comprehensive care.
