Exterior detailing typically begins with a thorough wash, followed by decontamination using clay or iron remover, and paint correction through polishing to reduce swirl marks and light scratches. After correction, a protective layer is applied, such as wax, polymer sealant, or a ceramic coating. The package may include wheel and tire cleaning, plastic trim restoration, and glass treatment.

It may also include odor removal, detailing of HVAC vents, and protection of interior surfaces with appropriate cleaners and protectants.

Results depend on conditions, products, and technique, and improper polishing or chemical use can cause surface damage.
