Autentisitas is the quality of being authentic, credible, and faithful to its origin, nature, or original form. In everyday usage, it covers cultural artifacts, cultural practices, information, and personal identities, emphasizing fidelity to source materials, methods, or lived traditions rather than mere appearance. The term, rooted in Latin authenticus and the English word authenticity, is widely used in Indonesian studies, museology, journalism, and digital culture.

In cultural heritage and anthropology, autentisitas concerns whether a representation or artifact preserves the genuine characteristics of its origin or community. Scholars in tourism and cultural studies sometimes describe multiple dimensions of authenticity, including ontological authenticity (truthfulness about origins and materials), epistemic authenticity (reliability of information), and existential authenticity (personal meaning or self-fulfillment derived from engagement). These perspectives highlight that authenticity can be relational and contested rather than absolute.

In information and media, autentisitas is tied to source credibility, provenance, and verification. Methods to support authenticity include documentation of provenance, metadata, independent certification, cryptographic signatures, digital watermarking, and time-stamped records. Digital platforms increasingly rely on traceable lineage to distinguish authentic content from counterfeit or misleading material.

Challenges include cultural commodification, misrepresentation of traditions, and disagreements over what constitutes true origins. Authenticity may drift as practices evolve, or as communities renegotiate meaning. Debates also address ethical concerns about appropriation and consent, especially when authentic expressions are extracted outside their communities of origin.
