Atherosklerotisk refers to a condition characterized by atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries. Plaque is made up of a deposit of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin. As this buildup grows, it can narrow or block the arteries, reducing the flow of oxygen-rich blood to organs and other parts of the body. Atherosclerosis can affect any artery in the body, but it is most commonly found in the arteries of the heart, brain, arms, and legs.

The exact cause of atherosclerosis is not fully understood, but it is thought to begin when damage occurs to the inner lining of an artery. This damage can be caused by factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and inflammation. Once the artery lining is damaged, fatty deposits begin to accumulate at the site of injury. Over time, these deposits can harden and narrow the arteries, making it difficult for blood to flow through.

Symptoms of atherosclerosis vary depending on which arteries are affected. If the arteries supplying the heart are narrowed, it can lead to chest pain (angina) or a heart attack. If the arteries supplying the brain are affected, it can cause a stroke. Atherosclerosis in the legs can result in pain when walking (claudication).

Risk factors for developing atherosclerosis include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity, and a family history of heart disease. While atherosclerosis is a progressive condition, lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and not smoking, along with medical treatment, can help slow its progression and reduce the risk of complications.
