An ass, or donkey, is a domesticated member of the horse family, Equidae. Donkeys are typically smaller than horses, with long ears, a sturdy body, and a short, upright mane. The plural form “asses” refers to more than one donkey. The term “ass” can also be an insult in English, reflecting the animal’s reputation for stubbornness.

Donkeys are herbivores that graze on grasses and shrubs. They have a compact digestive system, and can thrive on arid forage with relatively little water. They are highly social, form bonds, and communicate with brays and other vocalizations. They are durable and capable of working in rugged terrain.

Domestication occurred thousands of years ago in Africa and the Near East. Donkeys are used as pack animals, for riding, farming tasks, and sometimes for milk or meat in certain regions. Crossbreeds with horses yield mules (jack donkey x mare) and hinnies (stallion horse x jenny).

Reproduction: gestation about 11 to 12 months; foal stands soon after birth and begins to nurse; lifespans typically 25 to 30 years with proper care. Management emphasizes regular forage and water, shelter, hoof care, dental checks, and vaccination against common diseases.

Conservation and status: The wild Nubian or African wild ass (Equus africanus) is the wild ancestor and remains endangered; wild populations have declined due to habitat loss and competition with livestock. Domesticated donkeys are widespread globally and play essential roles in many rural economies.
