Asphaltpaved is a descriptive term used to describe surfaces paved with asphalt concrete, a composite material made of mineral aggregates bound with asphalt binder. The term is often written as asphalt-paved in formal prose, but may appear without a hyphen in some texts. It is commonly applied to roads, parking lots, runways, and similar surfaces.

Materials and construction: Asphalt concrete uses aggregates bound by bitumen. Hot mix asphalt is the standard for road works in many regions; warm mix asphalt reduces processing temperatures; cold mix is used for patching and some surface finishes. Construction proceeds from preparing the subgrade to laying a binder and wearing courses, then compaction with rollers to achieve the required density and surface texture.

Performance and maintenance: Asphaltpaved surfaces offer smooth driving, good load distribution, and rapid construction. They are economical and recyclable but can be vulnerable to rutting, cracking from freeze-thaw cycles, and weathering. Maintenance typically includes crack sealing, pothole repair, surface seal coats, and periodic resurfacing. Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is commonly incorporated into new mixes.

Environmental considerations: Paving with asphalt involves energy use and emissions, but asphalt is highly recyclable and allows for use of RAP and warm-mix technologies. Reflective or lighter-colored aggregates can mitigate heat absorption. Proper drainage and pavement design influence longevity and environmental impact.
