Artgerechtes describes practices and condition that align with a species’ biological and behavioral needs. In German-speaking welfare discourse the term is often used in phrases such as artgerechte Haltung (species-appropriate keeping) or artgerechte Ernährung (species-appropriate nutrition), signaling care that enables natural behaviors, physical health and psychological well-being.

Fundamental components include an appropriate environment and enrichment, opportunities for physical activity, social structures where applicable, a diet that suits the species, regular health care, and humane handling. The concept is grounded in welfare science and is commonly linked to frameworks such as the Five Freedoms and Welfare Quality, which emphasize freedom from hunger and thirst, discomfort, pain, injury and disease, to express normal behavior, and to have positive experiences. While the idea aims to be species-specific, it also recognizes individual variation within a species.

Applications span various contexts, from pet keeping to livestock farming, from zoological gardens to aquaculture and wildlife management. Examples include dogs receiving regular exercise and mental stimulation; cats needing vertical space and hiding options; farm animals benefiting from appropriate bedding, rooting material or grazing opportunities; fish requiring adequate tank size and clean water; reptiles needing correct temperature, humidity and UV light.

Critiques note that what is “artgerecht” can be subjective and time-dependent, influenced by cultural norms, resources, and scientific knowledge. Economic constraints and the risk of anthropomorphism can complicate implementation. Nonetheless, the concept serves as a guiding principle to improve welfare by meeting species-specific needs while balancing practicality and safety.
