Arcüreggyulladás, also known as sinusitis or a sinus infection, is an inflammation of the sinus cavities, which are air-filled spaces in the bones of the face. These cavities are located around the nasal passages and include the frontal sinuses (forehead), maxillary sinuses (cheeks), ethmoid sinuses (between the eyes), and sphenoid sinuses (behind the eyes). Inflammation can be caused by various factors, most commonly viral infections like the common cold, but also by bacterial infections, allergies, or fungal infections.

Symptoms of arcüreggyulladás typically include facial pain or pressure, a blocked or stuffy nose, and discolored nasal discharge. Other possible symptoms include reduced sense of smell, headache, fever, fatigue, and pain in the upper teeth. The location of the pain often corresponds to the affected sinus. For instance, frontal sinusitis can cause forehead pain, while maxillary sinusitis may lead to cheek pain.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis or identify complications. Treatment for arcüreggyulladás depends on the underlying cause. Viral sinusitis often resolves on its own with rest and symptomatic relief, such as nasal saline rinses and over-the-counter pain relievers. Bacterial sinusitis may require antibiotics. Antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids can be prescribed for allergy-related sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis, lasting for more than 12 weeks, may require different management strategies, including long-term medication or, in some cases, surgical intervention.
