Positivism is a philosophy that grounds knowledge in observable, empirical facts and the methods of science. It emphasizes measurement, quantification, and testable hypotheses, while typically rejecting metaphysical or religious explanations as outside meaningful inquiry. Over time, several distinct approaches have been grouped under the broader label of positivism.

Classical positivism, associated with Auguste Comte, argued that both natural and social phenomena should be studied with scientific methods. It favored observable data, law-like generalizations, and a progressive view of knowledge, often treating metaphysical speculation as illegitimate.

Logical positivism, developed by the Vienna Circle in the early 20th century, refined the project by stressing the verification principle: the meaning of a proposition is tied to how it can be empirically tested or shown to be tautological. This movement championed the unity of science, the primacy of logical analysis, and a clear distinction between meaningful statements and metaphysical assertions.

Post-positivism arose as a critique of earlier positivist confidence. Proponents such as Karl Popper emphasized falsification over verification, while Thomas Kuhn highlighted the role of paradigms in scientific change. Imre Lakatos offered a moderated view through research programs. Post-positivists acknowledge that observation is theory-laden and that knowledge is provisional and revisable.

Other related strands include operationalism, which links concepts to specific measurement procedures, and critical realism, which maintains that an external reality exists though our knowledge of it is imperfect. In contemporary inquiry, positivist ideas persist in emphasizing systematic data collection and hypothesis testing, often within a broader, post-positivist framework that also incorporates qualitative and critical methods.
