Aphidophagous is an ecological term used to describe organisms that feed on aphids. Aphids are small sap-sucking insects that can become major agricultural pests, so aphidophagous species often play a key role in natural pest control and integrated pest management programs.

Common aphidophagous predators include several groups of insects. Lady beetles (Coccinellidae) and their larvae are well known for consuming aphids. Lacewings (Chrysopidae and related families) and their larvae are voracious aphid consumers. Hoverflies or flower flies (Syrphidae) have larvae that prey on aphids, and aphid midges (Aphidoletes aphidimyza) are specialized dipteran larvae that feed on aphids. Parasitic wasps in the subfamilies Aphidiinae and related groups lay eggs inside aphids, producing parasitoid larvae that kill the hosts. Some predatory mites (Phytoseiidae) also feed on aphids, especially on plants with dense colonies.

Aphidophagous organisms contribute to biological control but vary in effectiveness depending on context, such as aphid density, crop type, and habitat. Conservation of natural enemies through habitat management, flower-rich margins, and minimal broad-spectrum pesticide use can enhance aphid suppression. Some aphid predators are generalists, feeding on other pests or prey, while others are specialists. Aphidophagy is an important component of ecological interactions in agroecosystems and natural environments, reflecting a dynamic balance between pest populations and their natural enemies.
