Antirefleksbehandling, also known as anti-reflective coating or AR coating, is a type of optical coating applied to the surface of lenses and other optical elements to reduce reflection and increase the transmission of light. This treatment is commonly applied to eyeglasses, camera lenses, telescope lenses, and microscope objectives. The primary goal of antirefleksbehandling is to minimize the amount of light that bounces off the surface of the lens, allowing more light to pass through to the eye or sensor.

The effectiveness of antirefleksbehandling stems from the principle of destructive interference. The coating is applied in very thin layers, typically made of dielectric materials like magnesium fluoride or titanium dioxide. The thickness and refractive index of these layers are carefully controlled so that light waves reflecting off the top surface of the coating interfere destructively with light waves reflecting off the bottom surface of the coating (which is the surface of the lens itself). This cancellation of reflected light reduces glare and improves image clarity.

Benefits of antirefleksbehandling include reduced glare, which can improve vision and reduce eye strain, especially in low-light conditions or when looking at bright light sources. For photography, it can lead to sharper images with better contrast and reduced internal reflections within the lens system. The improved light transmission also means that less light is lost, which can be advantageous in applications where light gathering is critical, such as in telescopes. The appearance of lenses with AR coating is also often enhanced, as reflections are less noticeable, making the wearer's eyes more visible.
