Antihisztaminoknál, or antihistamines, are a class of drugs that work by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical produced by the body's immune system. Histamine is responsible for many of the symptoms associated with allergic reactions, such as itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. When an allergen, like pollen or pet dander, enters the body, it triggers the release of histamine, which then binds to specific receptors on cells, causing these allergic symptoms. Antihistamines act by occupying these receptors, preventing histamine from binding and thus alleviating the symptoms.

There are several generations of antihistamines. First-generation antihistamines, like diphenhydramine, are known for their sedative effects because they can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the central nervous system. They are effective for allergies but can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness. Second-generation antihistamines, such as loratadine and cetirizine, are designed to be less sedating as they do not readily cross the blood-brain barrier. They are often preferred for daytime use due to their minimal impact on alertness. Third-generation antihistamines are often considered active metabolites of second-generation drugs and aim for even greater efficacy and fewer side effects.

Antihistamines are commonly used to treat a range of conditions, including seasonal allergies (hay fever), chronic urticaria (hives), food allergies, and insect bites. They can be taken orally in tablet or liquid form, or applied topically as creams or ointments for localized relief. While generally safe, antihistamines can interact with other medications and may not be suitable for everyone, particularly individuals with certain medical conditions.
